Hakone Gardens

Created in 1918 by a former gardener to the Emperor of Japan, this 18-acre garden is designed in the strolling-pond style typical of a 17th century Zen garden. Gazebos, stone lanterns, a moon bridge, waterfalls, and a stream with ponds containing Koi fish are found along pleasant pathways. A main house, as well as a teahouse with observation room, is featured. Parking is $7.00. The gardens are open Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. www.hakone.com.

Saratoga Village
Designated a California Historical Site in 1950, it features many buildings throughout the community’s business area and adjoining residential neighborhoods which were original to early Saratoga. Saratoga Historical Museum

Housed in a turn-of-the-century former drug store building, the museum contains displays of artifacts and photographs from early Saratoga. The city’s first library, now a Friends of the Saratoga Libraries bookstore, and the McWilliams House, circa 1865, are adjacent historic buildings. Docents offer historic sites guided tours by appointment only. The Museum is open Friday through Sunday 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. or by appointment, and admission is free. www.saratogahistory.com.

The Gallery at Montalvo

This stately, Mediterranean-style mansion houses exhibits of contemporary Bay Area artists or artist residents. Exhibits change every six weeks. Call ahead for updated information. Madronia Cemetery
Oak St. & 6th St. 867-3717
The cemetery, located on the hillside just above Saratoga Village, was established in 1854. This is the final resting place of Mary Ann Day Brown, the wife of the abolitionist John Brown of Harper’s Ferry infamy. Plots are available for Saratoga and Monte Sereno residents only. Memorial Day services, sponsored by the Saratoga Foothill Club, are held here each year.
