Member Pages

Should you have a Member Page on the Chamber website?

Included with your business membership is a listing of your business in the chamber’s directory. But you can get many more leads by purchasing a link from your listing to a member page or your own website if you have one. Let me explain why.

Let’s say that you have a restaurant. Here’s what your listing in the chamber directory might look like:

The "View:" line is added if you purchase a member page or a link to your website. Now let’s see what happens when someone looks for your restaurant.

Most people use search engines like Google or Yahoo to find information on the Internet. These sites “index” the words and phrases found on the millions of pages on the Internet.

If a person is looking for a restaurant, they’d enter the word “restaurant” in the search engine. When I did this (Aug 2006), Google found 478,000,000 pages! So my search has to be narrowed down. Next I tried “restaurant saratoga” and now it found 1,990,000 which is still way too many. Many listings were for Saratoga Springs in New York. So I tried “restaurant saratoga ca” and now it’s down to 689,000. So you can see that searches have to be specific and even then it’s difficult for you to be found on the whole Internet. (I didn’t add “family” to the search term because this is a fictitious business.)

On the chamber site, we have our own search engine that indexes the words found just on our site. This eliminates the outside competition. When I used it to search for “restaurant” I found 60 listings.

There are two things to learn from this: 1) it’s the specific words that find you and 2) it’s difficult to be found on the Internet.

Let’s look at the words problem. If you don’t have a member page or your own website, the only words about your business are contained in your chamber listing above. If you purchase a member page, you can add words for specifics your customers might be searching for. For example, it should contain details about your restaurant such as “children welcome, inexpensive, juicy hamburgers, free 2nd meal on Monday, home-made apple pie, etc.” Note that these words and phrases will be indexed by Google as well as the chamber’s internal search engine so anyone searching for them is more likely to find your member page.

Some members that have their own website ask for just a link from their member listing above directly to their website. To some this seems like a good idea but actually the member page has advantages:

  • A member page adds words and phrases that are indexed by the chamber’s search engine. Without this page, chamber searches will only find the words in your listing. For example, if you serve hamburgers and a person searches for them, you won’t be found.
  • These words and phrases on your member page are indexed by outside search engines like Google and Yahoo too. A member page creates another listing for your business in these other search engines. Every listing helps your visibility.
  • If your site doesn’t have information specific to your Saratoga business (which is true of many corporate sites), your site won’t be found by any search engine searching for this information. On your member page you can put your name, local information, directions, specialties, etc.
  • You still can have a link from your member page to your website.
  • Search engines like Google and Yahoo increase the rank of your site if it has links to it from other sites; especially if they have lots of visits. Your site will be ranked higher if it has a link from your Saratoga member page than just a direct link from your listing.

In conclusion, a member page is the best opportunity for your business to be found by the public on the Internet. The chamber website receives about 490 visits each day. (We have 7,200 “hits per day,” an obsolete term that exaggerates activity.) The average member page receives 1.26 visits per day. That’s 460 visits per year. What does it cost you to get a customer?
